The latest poll shows Abdul El-Sayed with a sizeable lead over Congresswoman Haley Stevens and state Sen. Mallory McMorrow in the Democratic primary race for U.S. Senate.

The poll, conducted by Mitchell Research & Communications on behalf of MIRS, a Lansing-based news service, shows El-Sayed with 28 percent support, compared to Stevens with 18 percent and McMorrow with 17 percent. Another 38 percent were undecided.

The poll, conducted May 1-7 of 405 likely voters in the Democratic primary in August, has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points.

"It is very clear that one of the most important factors in El-Sayed’s movement up in the polls is the support he is receiving from far left progressives who very strongly oppose United States and Israeli intervention in both Gaza and Iran," said Steve Mitchell, CEO of Mitchell Research & Communications, in a press release on the poll.

"His support really bumped up after the endorsement by Hasan Piker. It will be interesting to see whether this is enough support to allow him to win. However, it is important to remember that with two women and with one man, the man has an advantage because the women vote will be divided almost equally."

Earlier polls had shown Stevens and McMorrow in a statistical dead heat, with El-Sayed just a few points behind, Mitchell said.

The poll also shows Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson with a 62-8 percent lead over Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson in the Democratic race for governor. Another 30 percent are undecided.
