Perry Johnson and U.S. Rep. John James
One of the popular games in politics is for candidates to try to bump others out of the race through ballot petition challenges. Often, the issue involves valid signatures, but it can also involve technicalities in the filings.
Republican gubernatorial candidates John James and Perry Johnson are both facing challenges to their ballot petition signatures from each other’s camps, the Michigan Advance reports. Each alleges that the other does not have enough valid signatures to qualify for the ballot in the August primary.
The Michigan Advance reports:
Mission Michigan, a PAC supporting James, and Glenn Clark, described in initial reporting by Bridge Michigan as a Johnson booster, each filed complaints with the Board of State Canvassers on Thursday. In 2022, the board kicked five GOP gubernatorial hopefuls, including Johnson, off the ballot for invalid or fraudulent signatures.
The complaint against Perry Johnson involves allegations of fraudulent and duplicate signatures. The allegations against John James include a signature from someone who is supposedly dead and others that are allegedly fake.
James leads in most polls, followed by Johnson, who has poured a lot of his own money into advertising.
