Detroit mortgage mogul Dan Gilbert, whose net worth is reportedly nearly $30 billion, is splitting up with his wife, Jennifer, after 30 years of marriage.

In a statement, Gilbert, 63, — who also owns the Cleveland Cavaliers — and Jennifer said:

"After 30 meaningful years filled with love and gratitude, we have together made the difficult decision to end our marriage. Our journey has been profoundly shaped by our love and devotion to our children — including the enduring memory of our beloved son Nick, in addition to our commitments to Detroit and Cleveland."

"As our relationship evolves, our friendship and partnership remain steadfast. In this next chapter, we will continue working on our fight to eliminate neurofibromatosis and uplift the communities we both cherish."

"As we move through this transition, we ask for understanding and respect for our family’s privacy."

Rumors of a divorce had been circulating for several months.

The Detroit News reports:

The divorce filing was entered Friday morning in Oakland County Circuit Court's Family Division. It states that the couple entered a "comprehensive post-nuptial agreement" effective April 17 this year that "resolved all issues arising out of the Parties' marriage (including but not limited to alimony/spousal support, attorney fees, property division, taxes and other issues related to the marriage)."

Gilbert, who grew up in Southfield, built Quicken Loans into a mortgage empire that eventually became known as Rocket Companies. The company includes a real estate and development arm. He’s often credited with transforming downtown Detroit into a vibrant business and office district.

With success came some heartbreak. In 2019, he suffered an ischemic stroke on the right side of his brain.

Earlier this year, Bloomberg Businessweek reported that he lost the use of the left side of his body and has been undergoing intensive physical rehabilitation ever since. He has been using a wheelchair most of the time.

In 2023, his son Nick Gilbert, 26, died from neurofibromatosis, a genetic condition that causes non-cancerous tumors to grow along nerves in the skin, brain, and other parts of the body.

The Gilberts are the second big-name couple to break up this year.

Earlier this year, Ilitch Holdings CEO Chris Ilitch and his wife, Kelle Ilitch, filed for divorce.
