With Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield far ahead in the most recent poll for mayor, and with her fundraising exceeding that of all other candidates, the Aug. 5 primary is really about who will come in second place and face her in the general election.
At least that's how Mario Marrow, a political analyst and consultant based in Southfield, sees the race.
"The race is clearly for who will take second place," Morrow tells Louis Aguilar of The Detroit News. "No one is going to catch Sheffield."
Nine candidates are on the ballot, and others are running as write-ins.
Sheffield has raised more than $807,000 this year, while the second-highest fundraiser is Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr., with a little over $409,000, The News reports. Sheffield's supporters include a PAC affiliated with mortgage mogul Dan Gilbert.
The latest poll by Target Insyght, published by Deadline Detroit on July 22, shows Sheffield with 34 percent, followed by former Council President Saunteel Jenkins with 17 percent and Kinloch with 16 percent. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 5 percentage points.Other candidates in the poll include:
- City Councilman Fred Durhal III: 6 percent
- Former Police Chief James Craig: 6 percent
- Attorney Todd Perkins: 4 percent
- Retired businessman Joel Hasshiim: 1 percent
- Entrepreneur Jonathan Barlow: Less than 1 percent
