Hamtramck Police Chief Jamiel Altaheri, who retired last year from the New York City Police Department, has been suspended with pay by the city manager pending an investigation into possible improprieties, Fox 2 reports.

The station reports that Altaheri, the city’s first Yemeni-American police chief—hired in May 2024—was suspended after a whistleblower anonymously sent a detailed email of allegations to city officials, following a report to the Michigan State Police.

Hamtramck has a sizeable Yemeni population, and the mayor is also Yemeni-American.

Fox 2 reports that the allegations include questions about election fraud and Altaheri’s possible involvement in a potential presidential pardon of a wealthy New York City financier who had been convicted of a financial crime and was a friend of Altaheri.

A bio states that Altaheri was first Yemeni-American to attain the rank of police captain in the New York City Police Department.
